Chocolate Covered Dried Orange Slices
Chocolate-covered dried oranges are a beautiful way to extend the use of dehydrated oranges. They are perfect for parties, gift-giving, and sharing a special treat with someone you love right from your kitchen and dehydrator!
Chocolate-Dipped Dehydrated Oranges
Ingredients:
- Dried orange slices or candied orange slices. If you don’t want to go through the process of dehydrating oranges, you can purchase dehydrated orange slices.
- Dipping chocolate. I used the Wilton Brand, but any dipping chocolate wafer will work fine and be convenient. You can use chocolate chips as well. You can use milk chocolate or dark chocolate or white chocolate. It’s all what you prefer.
- Sprinkles: You can use flaky sea salt salt, chunky sugar crystals, finely ground nuts such as pecans or pistachios, etc.
Equipment:
- Parchment paper or silicone sheet
- If using the double-boil method, 1 saucepan, and one glass bowl
Instructions:
- Please review these full directions on how to dehydrate oranges. Quick instructions: slice less than 1/4″, dry at 125°/52° for up to three days, or place into an oven at the lowest possible temp (below 125F helps retain the pretty color) and dry until they break easily.
- Melt chocolate per directions on package. Use a double boiler on your stovetop or a microwave.
- Dip 1/2 of a dried orange slice in chocolate.
- Sprinkle topping if desired.
- Place onto parchment or silicone-lined baking sheet to dry and harden (I gave it an hour).
- Place into an airtight container for storage.
Gift Giving
I love wrapping up 8-10 of these into food-grade cellophane gift bags to give out as hostess gifts, as stocking stuffers, or to friends and neighbors for the holidays.
Adding a little bow or cinnamon stick or something helps enhance the packaging.
Are dried oranges edible?
Yes. Orange rinds are fully edible. However, if your oranges have very thick piths (the white stuff), it is helpful to blanch them for two minutes, then put into an ice bath to stop the cooking process, can help reduce the bitterness.
Can I use candied oranges?
Yes! This will be especially good with candied oranges!
How long will chocolate-dipped oranges last?
Up to six months in airtight storage. Dried oranges will last a year or two (but may darken over time if not stored in an airtight container in a cool, dark, dry place.
Can these be frozen?
No. Chocolate does not like to be frozen and may lose it’s color. Can you do it? Yes. Is it best? No.
Why did my dried oranges turn brown?
This is due to high heat exposure when drying or light exposure when storing. Use a low temperature (it’s about heat, not about time) to keep that beautiful orange color.
